A slip dress is an easy solution to dressing well in the heat of summer, but what about in the winter months? The slip dress can be part of a cold weather ensemble as well. Juxtaposed with winter layers, the effect is one of lovely contrasts.

Alexander Wang, known for the urban cool designs of his namesake label, as well as his work as the Creative Director of Balenciaga, announced a surprising venue for his February 8 show for New York Fashion Week. The Brooklyn Navy Yard hosted his highly anticipated runway show, slated as the last show of that day, which helped fashion folks heading to the outer borough from the usual Manhattan venues. This week’s Vogue A Trois is the T by Alexander Wang Silk Slip Dress. I chose this dress not only because I adore Mr. Wang’s designs, but also because it is lined—important in a slip dress—and the split t-back, which allows you to wear the dress in reverse.

Layering the wispy sheer Haute Hippie sweater over the slip dress adds warmth while still keeping the beautiful dress in view. Cover your legs with the cool limited edition hosiery that were made via a collaboration between American Apparel and Swedish artist Hanna Terese Nilsson. The leather open toe Felicite Ankle Boots by Laurence Dacade is a gorgeous hybrid of a bootie and a sandal that can be worn with tights in colder weather and without in warmer months. Aspesi’s luxurious wool top coat paired with Topshop’s Fedora will keep you looking chic as you dash from work to dinner out. Keep your jewelry simple with the timeless beauty of the Hermes bracelet—which would make a perfect valentine gift, by the way.

I hate being cold. This delicious Boden navy mohair cardigan sweater makes sure this won’t happen in a groovy way and pairs the classic combo of blue and black perfectly. Hue ink blue tights worn with the MM6 Maison Martin Margiela wedge boots keeps this vibe going strong. For accessories, I have to say Marni makes some of the most interesting jewelry around—the composition of horn and leather to create this tree necklace is amazing. The little black cameo ring adds an element of funky. And Coach is getting some attention again these days, so adding the Classic Madison Satchel and a go-big-or-go-home bright lime really makes this urban outfit complete.

For an edgier look, wear the AW slipdress in a tunic fashion underneath leather leggings, such as these Frances Leon Maximus Tights. The sheer plaid Madewell Bromley blouse over the top of the silk dress still shows it off, and can be worn buttoned or not. I love the French label Maje, and this Distrait chain detail sweater is understated cool over the top of all of it. Get yourself some sky high heel booties like this Via Spiga Bakel Booties to show off some sexy style. Rebecca Minkoff has some surprisingly edgy and wallet friendly jewelry—the Blades Arrow Ring is cool and only 78 dollars. The Commes des Garcons wallets and pouches are another coveted thing to carry right now. The patent leather patchwork version of this is spot on fabulous.

You needn’t lose the feminine qualities of the dress with winter layers but can enhance it with simple styling. Once we all thaw out, you have a beautiful dress that will shine on its own in the warmer months ahead.
