My first encounter with the beloved maxi skirt was back in the day when I was still sporting bangs a la scotch tape and Mom’s scissors, along with a pair of wicked blue pointed cat eye glasses. Needless to say, I wasn’t quite yet ready for my close up. My sister and I often had clothes made for us by our grandmother, who was quite a whiz behind the old Singer. Maxi skirts and dresses ruled the day back then, so our grandmother kept us “stylish.”

These days I still adore a beautiful maxi skirt. While the mini skirt can be trickier for this reason or that, the maxi skirt is a perfect silhouette that is chic and pretty on everyone. I have chosen Brazilian Designer Cecilia Prado Taiz Maxi Skirt featured at Anthropologie for this week’s Vogue a Trois. Cecilia Prado is known for her unique knitwear techniques, an artist who is true to her Brazilian heritage but with a European flair to her designs. This gorgeous knit skirt is grey and gold with colored flecks, making it perfect for day or evening.

Maximum Chic

The first look is based around the ELEVENPARIS Graphic Tee—because who doesn’t love Lenny Kravitz? There’s that ongoing mustache craze referenced in it, and Lenny just makes it that much cooler. It’s a great casual look that still keeps it chic when you add the two-tone Chloe Bernie Leather Ankle Boots, and the cropped denim Snap Jacket from Current/Elliott takes the place of a sweater or blazer. Don’t forget the sassy sunglasses—these Tortoise Quay Kitti Shades are a whole lot of cat eye fun. And I love all animal prints, but zebra has to be one of my favorite obsessions this season. This amazing Rochas Zebra-Print Haircalf Foldover Clutch is at the top of my wish list, so Santa, if you are listening, I have been very good this year.

Maximum Chic #2

Party season is just around the corner, and the metallic details of the Taiz Maxi skirt make it a great piece for a casual yet festive gathering. The Kooples Peter Pan Collar Blouse is a perfect background for the lacy effect of the BCBG Floral Statement Necklace. Keep the sparkle going with accessories like Milly’s Delano Metallic Mini Clutch and a beautiful little stack of Henri Bendel Deluxe Hand Me Down Stack Rings. Wear the Tabitha Simmons Hai Black Hologram/Python heels peeking out from beneath the ankle length skirt and you are ready for any holiday gathering.

Maximum Chic #3

This third look is polished and modern with pieces that have a distinct profile to them. The line of the skirt is so flattering with its sweeping shape that a cropped sweater is the perfect mate for letting it shine. This Tee by Alexander Wang cropped sweater is cozy and chic and the deep blue color picks up the colored fleck pattern in the skirt’s knit. Luxe Tory Burch Milano Blue Suede Booties are an update from the days of Elvis, and throwing in a pattern that plays off the color palette of the skirt with the Elizabeth and James Calf Hair Sling Backpack is a great way to complement both pieces. I get a lot of use out of my felt hat this time of year. It’s a chic way to avoid a bad hair day. Finally, this J.Crew Jeweled Cuff is a fantastic little optical illusion piece. With its plexiglass base, it appears that the jewels are floating on your arm. Wear it over your sweater to make the jewels pop.

It’s a fun time of year to introduce new silhouettes into your wardrobe and the maxi skirt can give your closet maximum style. Choosing a neutral skirt with a twist means you can change up your look easily with a ton of versatility. Look for modern lines that flatter and an ankle skimming length to show off your fabulous footwear for a look that shows off your personal style.
